Nutella has always been near and dear to my heart as a chocoholic and finding creative ways to remake it into beloved desserts has been a delicious past-time. As a Midwestern native, I loved puppy chow as a kid, it was a common treat we enjoyed in classroom potlucks and reaching back to that nostalgia but with a chocoholic's twist had been mulling in my mind for some time.
For those who haven't had puppy chow, its essential components are a sweet treat made out of Chex cereal with peanut butter and chocolate covered in powdered sugar. As I'm not personally not as keen on peanut butter, I left it out of this recipe and instead focused on utilizing Nutella to draw out the hazelnut chocolate flavors. I hope you enjoy this relatively simple but delicious indulgence as much as I did. Noshejaan!
RECIPE
INGREDIENTS:
8 tbsp butter
1 1/2 cups chocolate chips
1 cup Nutella or 7.7 oz. Nutella jar
One 12 oz. box of Chex cereal
1 to 2 c powdered sugar
INSTRUCTIONS:
Melt butter and chocolate chips together in a pan until it becomes completely liquified.
Add Nutella to chocolate mixture and stir well until it becomes a smooth mixture.
Place Chex cereal in a bowl and pour chocolate mixture on top. Fold chocolate mixture in with a spatula, being careful to not break the cereal too much and incorporate the chocolate well throughout.
Place cereal mixture in a gallon size ziploc bag. Add 1 c powdered sugar, and shake bag well to have powdered sugar cover all cereal well. Taste the mixture, if it is not as sweet as you desire, continue to add 1/3 c sugar at a time until reaching desired sweetness. I prefer using 1 c personally as I don't like an overpowering sweetness, but most recipes will recommend 2 c powdered sugar.
